Looking as Young as You Feel with Fillers and Injectables

Filler restoration is used for different effects and purposes ranging from eliminating fine lines and wrinkles to enhancing facial contours. Dr. Goldhar refers to filler treatments as cosmetic sculpting under the skin. The results are highly dependent on the skill and experience of the injector.

Genetics, aging, weight loss, illness, and sun damage can result in a decrease in deeper supporting tissues. This loss in volume results in wrinkles, concavities and sagging of the skin. The new generation of non-animal sourced, hyaluronic fillers can provide a safe, long lasting, rapid solution at a very reasonable cost.  These new generation fillers have been shown to stimulate collagen production.

JuvedermTM, Juvederm PlusTM and VolumaTM

Injectables or fillers used by CosMedix MD are JuvedermTM, Juvederm PlusTM and VolumaTM, which are forms of hyaluronic acid, a natural component of skin. Since these fillers are non-animal derived they are free from viruses, non-antigenic, long lasting, stable, are natural looking and require no skin tests as allergic reactions are rare.  VolumaTM is the newest trend in facial rejuvenation to replace lost volume.  VolumaTM is used to enhance cheeks and contour jawlines. Results are immediate.

Sculptra

Sculptra is an injectable fruit acid derivative that is used to correct depressions or concave areas of the skin due to tissue volume loss. Typical areas that can be corrected are the hollowing of the cheeks or temples, the cheekbone, brow areas and the deep folds around the upper mouth region. Sculptra has also been used to fill in depressed areas from acne or mechanical injuries.

Sculptra is a unique 'filler' that is somewhat different from traditional fillers such as Restylane or Juvederm. It is composed of microscopic poly-L-lactic acid particles that stimulate our body to form its own new collagen. This collagen can last up to 2-3 years before being reabsorbed. The Sculptra itself is biocompatible and biodegradable and in fact is made of the same material as dissolvable stitches and soft tissue implants that have been in use for over 30 years. Since the Sculptra acts by stimulating renewal of your own tissue, it can take up to 8 weeks after each treatment to see the results. Generally 2-3 treatments are required to get the best results.

Side effects with Sculptra injections can include bruising at the injection site as well as some tenderness, swelling or pain. These generally disappear within several weeks. Small bumps can be felt but not seen under the skin in a small number of people.

Most people are extremely happy with the smooth contoured; long lasting correction that results from professionally administered Sculptra injections.

Fillers and Injectables - Frequently Asked Questions

What areas can be treated by fillers?

Fillers are used in areas where there has been tissue loss due to the natural aging process, drugs, disease or accidents. This can include correction of sunken corners of the mouth (marionette lines), deep areas between the nose and side of the mouth (nasolabial folds), thin lips, bleeding lip lines, crows feet and forehead frown lines. Fillers can also be used for depressions caused by acne. Recently, fillers have been used to reduce or eliminate depressions around the lower eyelids and to enhance sagging brows and cheek bones. They can also be used to correct nose deformities and a weak chin.

How long do the effects of a filler treatment last?

CosMedix MD has found that fillers last about 9-12 months in most areas and about 6 months in the lips. The duration of the filler depends on the mechanical activity of the area, the metabolism of the individual, injection techniques, volume and density of the material used and the natural aging process of the individual.  With JuvedermTM some corrections can last up to 18 months.

Are fillers better than Botox®?

Botox® and fillers are often used together to enhance and to achieve the best results. Botox® is used to relax muscles that often cause wrinkles. Fillers can be used to lessen or eliminate lines or grooves that have been caused by the action of muscles.

What is a filler treatment like?

Filler procedures usually require 20-30 minutes and are minimally invasive. Dr. Goldhar generally uses a local anesthetic on the treatment area. Fillers are administered with special needles directly into the area being treated and then sculpted by massage to get a smooth appearance and feel. Discomfort should be minimal and brief during the actual process. Taking a Tylenol before the process is recommended.

What are common side effects?

Slight redness or swelling can often be present for a few hours due to the massage Occasionally swelling can be present for a few days. Application of a cool pack after treatment generally reduces the amount and duration of swelling.

Bruising can occur due to the injection. To reduce the chance of bruising, ASA, vitamin E and alcohol should be avoided for 1 week prior to treatment. Rutin and arnica can help reduce bruising.

People with a history of cold sores around the mouth can take anti-viral medications to help reduce the chance of getting a flare-up.
